In Record Time

In Record Time, a collection of hand-annotated and digitized poems commissioned by digital art platform OpenSea in partnership with Art Basel, is a performance of analog generativity—the term Caballero uses to describe how readers and writers construct each other in an endlessly procreative process.

Every reading becomes a unique universe.

At the core of the collection is Training Data, a poem Caballero wrote to commemorate the launch of Zero 10, the fair’s new digital sector, situating a historic moment within her own story.

Caballero invited various artists to hand-annotate Training Data. By visualizing multiple encounters with a single poem, this project illuminates the evolving life of a text, forever shaped by interpretation, time and context.

Some of the annotators of Training Data include artists Refik Anadol, Beeple, Auriea Harvey, Tyler Hobbs and IX Shells

The coexistence of analog marginalia and digital presentation reflects how memory is presently archived, through experience and code. The tension between private and public memory drives Caballero’s literary practice; she believes we access the universal through the personal and the transcendental through the mundane. This same tension propels The Years, French Nobel Laureate Annie Ernaux’s monumental act of collective remembrance, to whom she dedicated Training Data.

Every annotation was gathered in situ in Miami over a 24 hr period, with annotators marking up Caballero’s poem in red, a recurring motif in her work, used to denote intertextuality. When we write in red, we are writing over existing words, but we are always creating over century’s worth of literature, co-creating alongside all the literature that has come before.

Caballero was invited to perform her poem Training Data during a cocktail celebration opened by Art Basel, together with the fair’s CEO Noah Horowitz, Zero 10’s curator Eli Scheinman, and Fabrizio Santamato, Zero 10’s project lead.
